Haddon's Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime was thoughtful, populated with believable characters and struck a chord with readers that made discussion and pondering inevitable.
This book, on the other hand, was just whiny. And it was such whining! Such self-consumption! Everyone was only concerned with their own little world, letting the rest of their family spin out of control without any regard.

- A good end to a bad day

Tonight I came home early. I wrenched my back at work and I was grouchy because I hadn't finished everything I needed to and I was in pain.
J came by and asked whether I wanted leftovers for dinner. Meh. Nothing sounded good.
So he made me "Dutch" (read leftover) chili. It has hot turkey sausage, a chipotle pepper in adobo sauce, two jars of homemade V8 and the canned beans and tomatoes from the pantry. Throw in a large handful of chopped celery and his secret chili seasoning, and I feel much happier than the rest of this day warrants.

I love homemade macaroni and cheese. I make it without a recipe, so every single time is a new taste sensation. If I'm in a spicy mood, in goes a can of diced tomatoes and green chilies, with a splash of hot sauce. If I need more of a warm hug, I put in fresh tomatoes and crushed cracker crumbs on top. I can use sharp cheddar, or asiago, or romano, or all three. I can add cream cheese or Greek yogurt or sour cream, I can use macaroni noodles, or twirly noodles, or bowties, or even spaghetti, in a pinch.
And what could be better than macaroni leftovers?

I work in computer software. I translate developer into end user. Sometimes, this is fun, sometimes this is challenging. Lately it's just stressful. I lay awake in bed, trying to calm my mind down enough to fall asleep at night, so I can get up and put in another ten or eleven hour day.
Work. Deadlines. Doing two weeks worth of work in the next week. Mentoring a new hire during the busy next month. Navigating the foggy waters of another cross team project. Writing my yearly review of my work. Sharing my office after just a few short weeks of being alone.

My best friend met me in math class in college. Well, she probably knew who I was before that, and I definitely had seen her wheelchair flying across campus. Even in math class, I am the life of the party, and that particular math professor liked me because I asked about his grandkids and laughed a lot. (I could even raise my hand during a test and get answers, I was that good.)
So in lab for the class, when we were all entering excel equations and I was getting up to general mischief with the people around me, Cori would watch from across the room. The next lab, she would move a little closer and participate a little more and then a little closer and a little more.
Finally, we knew each other well enough to grin at each other in class or wave in the cafeteria, but it wasn't until I needed a roommate and she needed a roommate and I just marched down to her room and said "So, how about you and I move in together?" that we really got to know each other.
She had a mind like a diamond. And she would probably have loved that description.
