-
I stay focused best at night. I burn the hours from 10 pm to 1 am like there's no tomorrow morning. Aside from that, a cup of strong, black, home-roasted coffee or espresso go a long way too. Finally, it helps to do something you love—reading, writing, and teaching—to help you stay motivated and focused.

I interviewed in the bitter February cold, decked in woolen layers for a job in Hawai'i. The contrast still lingers as I teach high school English in 80-degree winters, and miss the crisp bite of a real season. Nevertheless, home is home, even if it isn't as cold as you'd like it.

- Ancestry
-
I don't really know much about my ancestry besides what most white people claim: a fair shake of British, a bit of Scotch-Irish, and eine kleine German. My family's left out the "and 1/16 Cherokee" line, which I am thankful for. I'm really more interested in cultural (think, literary) heritage than racial anyway—which is perfect, since I teach British, American, and World lit.
