Three more hours of sleep would be awesome. But, in all honesty, I wouldn't use those hours to sleep. I'd probably end up reading or studying or writing that damned book article that I've been avoiding. A 28-hour day would simply mean three more hours of work. We simply find more to do in the time we have. The same this is true with money. The more money we have, the more money we need.

First rule of relationships: Live to make your partner happy.

Live to make your partner happy.
My mom told me this when I was young. She said, "If you and your partner live every moment to make the other completely happy, all of your needs will be met and you'll have no reason to distress." Of course, my high school ears shut her off. But after multiple relationships and a divorce, I realize that she was right. I've tried her strategy in my current relationship, and I see that she knows what she is talking about. Of course, it's a two way street. My guy lives to make me happy, and I live to make him happy. It only works if both people are committed to each other.
It may seem silly or unconventionally selfless, but it makes sense. If both people strive to make the other person fulfilled and happy, then both people end up fulfilled and happy.

New or used?

It all matters which is new and which is used. If both are new or both are used, obviously I would choose the Prius. If the Prius is new and the Escalade is used, the realistic choice is to purchase the Escalade. A used vehicle of ANY kind is far more environmentally friendly than even the most environmentally-friendly new car. The energy and resources used to create a new hybrid vehicle is more than the energy and resources already expended to make the Escalade. If you really want to make a statement for environmental causes, you'd purchase the vehicle that has the least impact in the natural world. The Escalade (if used) has already been produced while the new Priuses are still being produced and consuming resources. Even the gas-usage ration between the new and used doesn't offset the amount of resources used to create a new vehicle.

Of course, I'd rather drive a Prius because Escalades are simply a "status" symbol and I'm pretty sure I don't want to belong to that "status." But if we're talking sensible versus indulgent, the Prius wins.

Because break-ups are life. Sometimes life kicks your ass. Other times, it doesn't. That's just the way things are.

"That's life (that's life), that's what all the people say
You're ridin' high in April, shot down in May
But I know I'm gonna change that tune
When I'm back on top, back on top in June

I said that's life (that's life), and as funny as it may seem
Some people get their kicks stompin' on a dream
But I don't let it, let it get me down
'cause this fine old world, it keeps spinnin' around

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out and I know one thing
Each time I find myself flat on my face
I pick myself up and get back in the race

That's life (that's life), I tell you I can't deny it
I thought of quitting, baby, but my heart just ain't gonna buy it
And if I didn't think it was worth one single try
I'd jump right on a big bird and then I'd fly"

Bears are beasts! If you've seen "Grizzly Man" you know what I'm talking about!!! A bear can go on both land and in water (while, granted, he is less agile in the water) while a shark is waterbound. Clearly that advantage would lead to a bear win.

In the course of any given day, I wake up and work out. I then sit down and attempt to wok on a dissertation. Monday thru Thursday I shape the young minds on America and hep them to become better writers and thinkers. When I'm done with that, I go manage a high-end women's retail store, In between all of that, I take care of the house, deal with a slightly manic Weimaraner, and spend time with friends and The Boyfriend. Nothing too exciting ... nothing too great. But it is what it is. A means to an end! Someday I'll make real money and have a real job. Preferably only ONE real job!

It's spring here in the 'boro, and springtime anywhere makes me miss Upstate NY. Spring and Fall are my favorite time back home in Ithaca. (Of course, spring doesn't happen up there for another month or so!) When the last cold snow melts and the earth begins to warm and the birds begin to sing and the trees begin to bud ... there is nothing like hiking in a gorge or splashing in a waterfall. The vineyards should be kicking into high gear and Ithaca Beer should be starting production of Partly Sunny -- the best beer ever! I haven't been home in over a year, and I miss it. Of course, the eternal warmth of the South is rather appealing ... But nothin' replaces home.

"I always believed it was the things you don't choose that makes you who you are. Your city, your neighborhood, your family. People here take pride in these things, like it was something they'd accomplished. The bodies around their souls, the cities wrapped around those. I lived on this block my whole life; most of these people have. [...] This city can be hard. When I was young, I asked my priest how you could get to heaven and still protect yourself from all the evil in the world. He told me what God said to His children. 'You are sheep among wolves. Be wise as serpents, yet innocent as doves.'"

These lines truly express how we find our identity in things that we have no control over. While we do have control over many parts of our lives, we often so strongly identify ourselves by our city or our neighborhood or our "people." The culture in which we are raised shapes us and gives us so much pride.

The last lines (about the priest) is an amazing line simply because it speaks to the evil and corruption in the world. By being vigilant and careful, we can see the evil and be smart while maintaining our "innocence."

a better education system that doesn't fail the least fortunate and cater to the most fortunate. With a higher level and quality of education, we can be sure of better jobs, better incomes, and a better quality of life in the long run. Of course, if you're looking for a quick fix, the bailout works great. But if you want to make the major problems go away for the long term, you have to be willing to put some time and energy (as well as money) into the situation. It's not going to fix itself overnight. Even with billions of dollars.
