Me? I would spend every minute worrying about how long before the power comes back. Our power lines are underground, I don't think we have had 12 hours of total combined blackouts in the past 13 years. Add to that PJ, who simply can't understand why the lights and everything but the laptops and the phones won't work.

I wanted to say 8-track, but it was my cousin's The Jazz Singer original soundtrack so it doesn't count. The first I owned was a K-Tel record, first (1983) in a series of top-10 hit records marketed in Latin countries, "Llena tu cabeza de rock" (fill your head with rock).

A-side:

1 MEN AT WORK • Down Under
2 BILLY JOEL • Allentown
3 TOTO • Rosanna
4 JOURNEY • Open Arms
5 SANTANA • Hold On
6 NINA HAGEN • Smack Jack
7 ADAM ANT • Goody Two Shoes

B-side:

1 ASIA • Heat Of The Moment
2 AFTER THE FIRE • Der Kommissar
3 SHAKIN' STEVENS • You Drive Me Crazy
4 SAGA • Wind Him Up
5 JUDAS PRIEST • You've Got Another Thing Comin'
6 REO SPEEDWAGON • Keep The Fire Burnin'
7 LOVERBOY • Working For The Weekend

My first cassette tape was Hemispheres, by Rush.

My first CD was Hysteria, by Def Leppard. I actually ruined my brand new Sony boom box from playing this CD at full blast. IT basically blew up the speakers.

As for digital music, I can't remember. I had hundreds of CDs, most ripped already so the first few songs I actually bought on iTunes were mostly out of curiosity about how the process worked.

My favorite is Cafe X-Press (http://www.cafe-xpress.com) in Bethesda, MD.

All of their sandwiches are incredible, they are very affordable and the staff is very fast. Even when it is very crowded you can expect to be in and out of there in just a few minutes.

My favorite is the Manhattan, Hot pastrami & corned beef topped with cole slaw, melted Swiss cheese and Russian dressing on a sub roll. It is frickin awesome, and one of the things I miss the most about Bethesda.

Back in the early 90's I had a college buddy that was always looking for the ultimate cheap meal. You could add a hot dog or Vienna sausages and a can of corn and it was an instant meal.

I am a scorched earth kind of guy, but I do telecommute over 99% of the time so even if my mind is not in the right place, my actions are.

Commuting would involve at least two hours of driving per day. Using public transportation would take even longer, and half of that time would be on commuter buses that don't run very clean, the rest in Metro rail, which is electrical.

We switched to CFLs mostly because of a campaign at PJ's school calculated how much we would save if every student changed one or two bulbs at home. We went and changed them all except for two overhead lamps that use a weird bulb format.

Probably a point-and-shoot digital camera with built-in HD video. My last digital camcorder had the HD part nailed but it sucked for still photography. My current candidate is the Sony DSC-W290.

In defense of my vice: coffee

        coffee break

My vice is caffeine. My mother was a teacher for many years (never in my school, that honor went to my kid brother) and she preferred to do things very early in the morning. She would be up before 5, doing things around the house, then when that was done, she would grade papers and tests, usually cursing at the stupidity of some of her students (this happened a lot).

She would wake us up right around that time to help with our homework, and quickly figured out that the way to keep us alert so early was to get us addicted to coffee. She brewed locally grown (Puerto Rico) coffee in the turkish style, which has the texture of a drip brew but is bitter and strong like espresso. She (and dad) drank it black or with steamed milk, both my brother and myself only drank it with the steamed milk.

The addiction has lasted into my late 30s. Coffee kept me awake in school, college, military service and through many years in the private industry.

As for quitting, I tried once: I had withdrawal headaches for over a week or so, then was clean and sober for a few days after that. Then I realized that there was no reason for me to quit all caffeinated beverages, only sugar-laden sodas so I went right back to the coffee mug and here I am today.

And yeah, I am drinking coffee right now.
