- My Ancestors' Stories
-
What ethnicity I come from, What I would like to know about my ancestry, and The Differences between two very different Grandmas, with two very different nationalities and up bringing.
My family's history is wide and varied. I am a mixture of Canadian, Irish, Scottish, Swedish, and Austrian/Bohemian. When I was young I just thought that I was Swedish due to a very active Swedish branch of my family. My Grandma, a staid Swede, would always say, "It's the Bohemian in you." When I did something like sitting cross-legged on the floor. I thought she was talking about my Dad's side of the family. But when I started researching my family tree, I realized she was talking about her husband, my Grandpa. His Mothers family was from Bohemia/Austria and I suspect Germany. My Grandma would also say, "Breeding tells, Rachel, breeding tells." She was my staid Swedish Grandma. A very serious minded, devout Lutheran. My Dad's Mom said things like, "If your palm itches, you are going to come into money." That side of the family had been in the United States since the 1600's. Some of her other pieces of advice were, "If you get the shivers for no reason, someone is walking over your grave." Or " If your ear itches someone is talking about you." Two very different Grandma's, from two very different family histories. It was what made life fun. I have probably gotten more from my Dad's Mom. I now use some of her colorful sayings. People always ask, "Where did you hear that?"
I would love to know how the Burlands from Ireland and Canada are connected to the English Burlands. My Great Grandma Atkinson would always say, per my Father, that everyone thought the Burlands were English. But they weren't. They were French. And they were pirates. I would love to know if this were true.

- Top 3 Historic Events I've Experienced
-
I could pick out more than 3 historic events that have happened in my lifetime. For instance the murder of Martin Luther King but I can only pick three....
The three most significant events that have happened in my lifetime are: John Kennedy's assassination, Robert Kennedy's assassination, and the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center being hit by two airplanes flown by Alquaida members. All were frightening events that changed the way I though about the world.

- Stuff I Collect
-
I collect family history memoribilia. I have gotten several books. Either written by or about one of my ancestors. I just had an old rocker recovered. It is a very old rocker that had been in the family for a long time. I also have the egg cups my grandpa ate his soft boiled eggs out of and a picture of my Great Grandma Mary Bergstrom's watch on a necklace. I have other glassware that my ancestors used. I even have a pottery jug that says Drs Clark and Clark veterinarian.
I first made my family tree. Then I thought it would be nice to have some pictures and stories about my ancestors. Which of course led into finding the souveniers of my ancestors everyday lives. I have been very lucky to have found quite a few beautiful pieces of my ancestors belongings. For me it is just a continuation of making the family tree. It is a fun and educational hobby. Every little piece of the past teaches me more about the ancestors I never met, yet am beginning to know quite well.

- Time Flies When You're on the Web
-
When I am looking for ancestors the time flies so fast that I forget what time it is.
I spend the majority of my time online looking for people. I am looking for my ancestors and my clients ancestors. There are so many great websites to go to that I could be online all day and all night. (That is not an exaggeration. I have done it a couple times.)
