The most beautiful places are often just outside of the city. Two years ago my partner and I went camping in the mountains just outside of town. The car was packed solid with camping gear, food and things we wouldn't need but thought to pack anyway.

The weather was unpredictable - rain every few hours, then blazing sun. Ry Cooder, Johnny Cash and the Juno Soundtrack were our soundtracks. We moved between tiny towns and exciting places to see with ease and without plans or direction.

We stopped at every interesting place, the Dutch cheese factory, look-out points, places with 'river' in the titles, living out of the car.

I'm terrible. I don't even know my neighbours.

But in my defense, this is common in Johannesburg. We live behind massive walls and treat everyone with suspicion. We have this horrible tendency of locking ourselves up with our security and alarms when openness would lower crime because we could see what was happening. And at least them we would wave at our neighbours.
