Pop and Mom were heading to Cabo San Lucas and asked if I wanted to come along. Lessee: live on the beach and no more office work for a while? I was packed before he finished asking the question.

Pop sold the house, bought a truck and a fifth-wheel, and we headed west to California, hung a left and kept driving through the desert and mountains until we ran out of land. We lived in the fifth-wheel for seven months until we found a nice little rental in Todos Santos.

Best year of my life.

Worst scars:

* Ripped the skin and upper muscle layer on my left hand when I was six or seven. The trail of blood and screaming up the four flights of stairs to my grandmother's apartment made it impossible to watch scary movies ever again.

* Took a long nail to each kneecap when I was twelve. Chased my stupid mutt out on the porch, where Pop had taken apart pieces of the railing and where he told us, in no uncertain terms, NOT to walk around. Fell down on my knees and became attached to a 2x4. I don't remember how the board was removed.

* Deep inch-long scar on my right ring-finger where I punched a plate glass window. $300 later, I learned that anger has a price.
