    • School Daze?
      • Class of 1991- Lew Wallace Killer Bees- Lady Steppettes Basketball Team. Is it really reunion time already?

        School Daze

This year marks our 20th out of high school. That actually looks crazy in print! Twenty years removed from a period in my life that seems like just yesterday. I have memories, good and bad, from my time at Lew Wallace High School. Unfortunately, I won't be attending my reunion because I have other obligations. That may simply be an excuse for not going, though. I'm not quite sure that I would attend if the weekend were free. While I acknowledge that I wouldn't trade my formative years in high school for all the tea in China, I am not certain that I am so chained to these memories that I feel I need to revisit those times. I had some great friends, but I also recall people who were extremely cruel to me and others. Of course, I've moved past the hurt inflicted by the words and actions of those people but that doesn't mean that I want to spend a weekend pretending to be glad to see them. I also am not interested in being around people whose mentality never graduated. They still live their lives like high school never ended. I know, I sound bitter (hell, maybe I am) but the bigger part of me says that I have simply evolved. I paid for the 10 year reunion weekend, went to the meet and greet, and opted to skip the rest. This time I won't waste my money. Hopefully, I'll get together with the folks that I'd like to see at some point during that week and get reacquainted, but seeing others will just dredge up old hurts that took me some time after graduation to get over. I wish I had a crystal ball to look into the future to see if I may regret this decision. If I'm still around for the 30th I may feel differently.

    • The Fountain of Youth
      • There is a saying- "you're only as old as you feel".
It reminds me of an episode of The Twilight Zone called "Kick the Can". It was about some elderly people who lived in a nursing home. A few of the residents reminisced about their childhood years, when playing kick the can was a popular pasttime. There were those who constantly complained that they were too old to waste time on those daydreams of yesteryear, but a few decided to sneak out in the middle of the night to play the game one more time. The episode ended with the residents who played regaining their youth while the naysayers jealously looked on. Rod Serling's point was well taken. Some people know how to tap into their childhood memory bank and relive some of the best moments. I'd like to think I am one of those people.

        Fountain of Youth

For the most part, I feel younger than what I am. I have a playful, free kind of spirit that keeps me young. The children in my family also provide me with a constant source of childhood innocence. They are my fountain of youth.
At 38 years young, I still try to play ball with the boys, crawl on the floor with my niece, and dance all night long. My friends are mostly young at heart. We take the time out to be silly and keep one another in stitches. I think the raucous laughter keeps us full of youthful vigor.
Of course, there are considerable reminders that I am getting older. I'm watching my own child develop into young adulthood and, surprisingly, I spend a lot of time imploring him to "act his age" . I sometimes wake up with aches and pains (even when I don't dance all night). I've spotted a couple of gray hairs and I have to report to a job that comes with its own share of stress. Because of all that, I relish the oppotunity to let my hair down and regress to a more immature state.
I want to grow old gracefully without having to feel old. My hope is that when I turn 70 I'll be married to someone who keeps me laughing, crawls around with the grandkids, and refuses to be old. It wouldn't hurt if he knew how to play kick the can, either.

    • The Jordan Syndrome
      • Some people can't operate outside of the constraints of a game. They are termed hyper-competitive. A lot of times, that is said with a little contempt behind it. We all know the type.

Michael Jordan 1993 Wheaties Box Unopened

The truth is, I am competitive about everything. I compete in my professional life, my personal life, my love life. Everything is a competition. I play sports, board games, darts and video games with the sole thought of winning (or at least making sure my competiton knows that I was in the game). I don't like to lose, but if I do I usually do so gracefully. I never quit... quitting is for losers (did I just sound like Charlie Sheen?). I am in love with the rush of being challenged and rising to the occasion. I was born to be in the game.

    • The Bestest Sporting Event Ever
      • With so many sporting events choose from, I must admit

        Cupcake Bowl XLI

I absolutely LOVE the Superbowl. I am an avid sports fan, obsessive Bears fan, and huge football aficionado (almost on a Rain Man level). I have never attended the Big Game live and I think the closest I will get is making the road trip to tailgate when Indianapolis hosts next year. Being close to the action will likely trump the usual "watch it at the bar with my homies" deal that I've become accustomed to. I can only hope that my Chicago Bears take it all the way- it'll be that much sweeter.

    • If I Could Read Minds
      • The idea of hearing everyone's thoughts all the time really isn't appealing to me. I would definitely have to be able to turn it off and on at will, and I'd only be interested in a few people's thoughts.

The Witch in the Window - She says she can read my mind!

My two year old niece fascinates me. I would really like to know what she is thinking from time to time. I'd like to get in my 16 year old son's head just to see what motivates him to make the decisions he does. Lastly, I need to read my best male friend's mind. I want to know if he wants more or if he is really happy with being "just friends".
