On Same-Sex Marriage

The fact that we even have to ask this question still says a lot about how much ignorance continues to allow institutionalized discrimination to flourish. Imagine if the question were about whether or not one supports the right of atheists to marry. After all, wouldn't that pose a threat to the idea of a union based on religious doctrine? Or how about infertile couples? If the union of man and woman is about procreation then why should they be allowed the benefits of marriage when they can't have children. Why not just choose any group one doesn't like and demand that they be banned from the right to marry - libertarians, ex-cons, Jews, gypsies, Mormons, swingers, NRA members, nudists, Scientologists, blacks, strippers, Spanish-speakers, the obese, cancer survivors, exhibitionists, little people. One may as well argue that allowing these groups to marry is causing the downfall of society. What's next - people marrying goats?

The very concept of singling out an entire class of citizens, millions of people, and denying them access to one of the most basic institutions of society - one which includes hundreds of tangible and important rights and benefits, solely because of gender - is clearly a violation of their constitutional rights, not to mention human rights. To support such obvious and blatant discrimination is morally and ethically indefensible.

There is not a shred of evidence that gay marriage has any negative effect on society or the institution itself. And enshrining prejudice into constitutional amendments banning same sex marriage does not prevent gay couples from getting married. It only prevents them from enjoying the numerous benefits given to heterosexual couples, resulting in gay families being treated in an unfair and unjust manner under the law.

Opponents of gay marriage don't seem to have a problem with convicted murderers or people on the sexual predator list having the right to marry, as long as the gender matching of the couple meets their approval. In essence, they are advocating using the power of the state to punish citizens because of who they are attracted to. The very notion that one portion of the population would use the government as a vehicle to attempt to control the most personal aspects of the lives of other people should be disturbing to everyone. Who a person is attracted to and who one falls in love with is not for society or the government to decide, especially in a culture which claims to cherish its freedom.

There is no legitimate reason for this lack of equality. Personal religious and moral views have no place in this argument. Simply because one doesn't like the idea of same sex marriage does not give them the right to deny the right of marriage to those whose heart and conscience leads them in such a direction.

Without any rational reason for this unequal and discriminatory treatment the only logical conclusion one can come to is that it is simply based on bigotry. People have exploited religion as a way to practice intolerance and hate-based politics since the beginning of history. One day in the future people will look back on the opponents of same sex marriage in much the same way we now look back on the segregationists of the 1960's. The tragedy is for those who couldn't or won't live to see a time where such hate and fear based prejudice is no longer acceptable behavior in mainstream society.

The Most Destructive Force to Mankind

There are many destructive forces coming from mankind itself, but they all seem to stem from a single source: greed.

The most destructive force to mankind is greed. This is the reason people exploit others. This desire to have more than one needs is never satisfied. Greed just creates more greed.

There's no excuse for some people to live in squalor while others live in excessive luxury. This is especially true when the reason those living in poverty are doing so in order for a small number of people to enjoy unlimited pleasures that only can be had at the expense of the suffering of others.

People use all sorts of ideologies, religious doctrines, moral judgments, politics, social divisions, racist theories, fear of being attacked, demonization, patriotism, ego-based sense of superiority, and all sorts of other mechanisms to rationalize the unbelievably unfair distribution of resources and the wealth they create. But in the end it's all just greed.

The manifestations of greed can be seen as early as childhood when the playground bully beats up the physically weaker children and takes their lunch money or toys. From there the child is trained to want more than others have. Being the best means defeating others. In its worst examples people will steal and even kill to satisfy their greed with no concern to how their actions affect others. And in extreme examples whole countries become complicit in killing thousands of other people in other lands to get more. Sometimes they'll even kill their own citizens if it helps to achieve their goals.

Some are so brazen in their acceptance of greed that they'll even claim it is a good thing, a necessary element to motivate productivity. In this mind-set mankind becomes deconstructed into not much more than a machine whose only purpose is to create more for the sake of having more. Taken to its logical conclusion we eventually are nothing more than gluttonous sociopaths who reject the very civility that has provided humanity with capability to cooperate so we can progress to a better life for all. Greed may produce short term gains for the few at the expense of others, but it is qualities such as cooperation, empathy, understanding, compassion, altruism, fairness, justice and freedom from exploitation that advances us to create a better world. Greed does the exact opposite.

A High School Class that Should be Mandatory

I really think they need to offer a class in critical thinking. It seems to be one skill that is lacking in many people I come across. It's something that can be applied to just about anything. And what else could have such a huge impact on a person's ability to make wise decisions, whether on the job, in relationships, with finances, health, voting, and how one functions in the world.

Too many people live their lives based on blind faith in what they've been told by others. This is true whether it's trying to fit into their peer group, guilt about displeasing parents, control by a significant other, following religious teachings even when they contradict basic common sense, forming opinions because they identify with some political ideology, pressure by a work culture, blind patriotism, belief that authority figures like doctors can't be wrong, assuming what the media says is always true, treating others unfairly just because that's how it has always been, stubbornly clinging to irrational beliefs to be passive aggressive or simply because a change in thinking is scary, ignorance because of isolation, willful ignorance or self-delusion in order to hide something or boost a fragile ego..... the list could go on and on and it has negative effects, both big and small, not only on the individual level, but all the way up to affecting entire nations.

If people could learn to balance their emotionally-driven beliefs with critical thinking based on reason, so many problems could be avoided. The psychological benefits alone would be worth it, not just for the student, but their future children and other people with whom they come into contact with. Even a modest reduction in irrational thinking and the actions which come as a result would have a ripple effect throughout society that clearly benefit us all.
