My first job was at Hickory Farms (but it wasn't in a shopping mall). I had just turned 16 -- I must have just applied at any store in the neighborhood that was hiring -- and I earned minimum wage: $3.35/hour!

I think I lasted a week before I was fired (the story isn't even very interesting), but I'm pretty happy with the way that worked out.

From Wikipedia: His problems are often caused by his own neuroses and an obstinate faith in his own understanding of ethics and etiquette. At the same time, he usually has good intentions and often finds himself a victim of circumstance and of the sensitive, easily-offended natures of those he encounters.

Cheryl Hines has a line in the 'Trick or Treat' episode that sums it up very nicely: "Not everyone knows about all your rules, Larry!"

There are the magazines I subscribe to, and there are the magazines I get every year because a certain airline keeps telling me I have unused miles I can convert even though I haven't flown them in 10 years.

Before I read any magazine I tear out all subscription cards, perfume ads, gate-fold ads, ads printed on heavy stock -- anything that makes it harder to fold the cover all the way back. #OCD

Vanity Fair, Fast Company & Wired
These are my long-standing magazine subscriptions. I read these from front to back instead of going directly to specific articles, and I try not to flip ahead because all three of these usually have interesting and unexpected articles that are a nice surprise. (Weird, I know.)

Glamour, Lucky, Allure, Vogue
About 10 years ago I earned 6,000 frequent-flyer miles on an airline I never fly, so I decided to to trade them in for a selection of magazines. I've been getting the same annual notice ever since. The selection varies a little year-to-year but are usually women's mags, golf mags, or People-ish.

Also: Every year I select Newsweek, and every year I never get a single issue.

RIP: SPY, Radar
I was informed of Radar's demise by a postcard informing me that the remainder of my subscription would be fulfilled by STAR. It seemed like a very fitting way for Radar to go out....

Not a day goes by that I'm not influenced in some way by 'Harold and the Purple Crayon'

One night, after thinking it over for some time, Harold decided to go for a walk in the moonlight. But there wasn't any moon, and Harold needed a moon for a walk in the moonlight. Fortunately, he had brought his purple crayon. So he drew a moon. He also needed something to walk on. So he drew a path...

In all sincerity: I was a vaguely artistic only child.

Harold taught me to let my imagination run wild; be aware of my surroundings; make my own path (and shortcuts); make a boat if I'm drowning; always leave a trail so I can find my way back; make a note of where the Moon is in the sky; and that there is no place like home.
